Male kickboxer wearing Kings Academy gear with boxing gloves, shin guards, and a championship belt over his shoulder, standing confidently in a studio setting

K-1 Style Kickboxing

1. LEGAL AND ILLEGAL TARGET AREAS:

  • Legal strikes: Punches, kicks, and knees to the front and sides of the head, torso (front and sides), and legs (including shin and thigh) are permitted.

  • Illegal areas: Back of the head, spine, back, top of the shoulders, groin, throat/neck—strikes to these areas are fouls.

2. KNEES and Clinch rules:
  • Allowed: One knee strike per clinch while holding opponent’s neck or shoulders; the clinch must then be released.

  • Your variation: If fighters wear shin pads, no knee strikes to the head; if no shin pads, knee to the head permitted. (Note: This is a local rule to help our less experienced athlete in a padded fight to develop in sport safely.)

3. SPINNING BACK FIST:

  • Legal under standard K‑1 rules, provided contact is made with the fist only, not the elbow. Striking with the elbow is illegal and penalised.

4. CATHING LEGS & CLINCH DURATION:

  • Catching or grabbing the opponent’s leg is prohibited. Stylised rules may allow a quick single strike before releasing, but standard K‑1 disallows leg catching entirely.

  • Clinch is time-limited (about 5 seconds) and only one knee allowed per clinch.

5. YOUTH ( UNDER-17 ) RESTRICTIONS:

  • No spinning back fist or knee strikes to the head allowed for competitors under 17. (Sporting safety provision—useful for youth development.)

6. SCORING SYSTEM:

  • 10-point must system:

    • Winner of round: 10–9

    • Even round: 10–10

    • If knockdown: 10–8 for opponent

    • Two knockdowns in one round or three in the fight: TKO (fight ends)

  • Strike scoring criteria (drawn from K‑1 scoring norms, summarized):

    1. Knockdowns

    2. Effective damage

    3. Clean strikes (especially effective ones behind guard)

    4. Aggression and ring control
(Strikes behind guard score higher; “checked” strikes earn less. Focus on hitting the right target and effectiveness.)

7. ROUND DURATION & NNUMBER

  • Grassroots: 3 × 1.5 minutes  (45 seconds rest between rounds).

  • Corporate / Amateur: 3 × 2 minutes or 5 x 2 minutes ( 1-minute rest between rounds).

  • Professional: 3 × 3 minutes or 5 × 3 minutes (1-minute rest between rounds).

8. EQUIPMENT RULES:

  • Gloves: 16oz for grassroots, 16, 14, 12 or 10oz for corporate, amateur, and professional depends on the weights and fighters experience.

  • Shin pads: Optional (mandatory for certain youth divisions).

  • Mouthguard: Mandatory for all competitors.

  • Groin guard: Mandatory for all male fighters.

  • Chest guard: Optional for female fighters.

9. PENALTIES FOR FOULS:

  • Referee may issue:

    • Warning – for minor fouls or unsportsmanlike behaviour (e.g., ignoring referee instructions, purposely dropping mouthguard, wasting time).

    • Point deduction – for repeated or serious fouls.

    • Disqualification – for dangerous or deliberate fouls.

9. TIE-BREAKER MECHANISM:

  • If a bout ends in a draw and a winner is required, the referee may order one extra round.

10. MEDICAL CLEARANCE:

  • Fighters and their teams are responsible for ensuring they are medically fit to compete.

  • If a fighter has been knocked out in the 6 weeks prior to the event, they may not compete unless cleared by a doctor.

  • Medical restrictions take priority over match-making.

11. REFEREE AUTHORITY:

  • The referee may issue a standing eight count if:

    • A fighter is not defending themselves.

    • A fighter is not following rules.

    • The referee deems it unsafe to continue without a pause.

  • Standing eight count gives the referee time to assess the fighter’s condition and decide whether the fight should continue.

12. REFEREE COMMANDS:

  • BREAK: Stop the current action, separate, step back, and be ready to continue immediately.

  • STOP: Full stop. No strikes allowed until the referee restarts the fight.

13. KNOCKDOWN PROCEDURE:
  • When a fighter is knocked down, the opponent must immediately go to the neutral corner.

  • Failure to do so may result in the referee giving the downed fighter extra recovery time.

  • In the final round, if a fighter deliberately avoids going to the neutral corner to waste time, the referee may deduct points and remove the privilege of the 8-count.

14. ANTI DOPING:

  • GAMMA NZ is aligned with national and international anti-doping rules.

  • Fighters may be tested at random for banned substances to ensure sport integrity, athlete health, and safety.

15. SAFETY & SPORT INTEGRITY:

  • These rules are designed to prioritise athlete safety while maintaining fair and competitive bouts.

  • All participants must show respect to opponents, officials, and the sport.

  • Muay Thai:

    • Clean, powerful strikes (especially knees, elbows, and body kicks) score higher than punches.

    • Off-balancing and sweeps from clinch are scored.

  • Mod Thai:

    • Scoring is the same as K-1 except clinch, sweep, knees are allowed.

6. ROUND DURATION & NUMBER:

  • Same as K-1 unless otherwise stated by event rules. Traditional Muay Thai title bouts may be 5 × 3 minutes with 2 minutes break between rounds.
